Selection stages and examination structure

IBPS PO 2026 Selection Process and Exam Pattern

The IBPS PO 2026 recruitment process includes the Online Preliminary Examination, Online Main Examination, mandatory Personality Test, Common Interview and provisional allotment to a participating bank.

CRP PO/MT-XVI official pattern
1 Preliminary Examination Online objective examination used to shortlist candidates for the Main examination.
2 Main Examination Objective tests and an English descriptive paper. Main marks affect final merit.
3 Personality Test Mandatory, non-qualifying self-report personality assessment before interview.
4 Common Interview Conducted by participating banks and coordinated through the nodal bank.
5 Provisional Allotment Based on merit-cum-preference, vacancies, reservation rules and eligibility verification.

IBPS PO 2026 Main Examination Pattern

The Main Examination consists of objective tests for 200 marks and a descriptive English paper for 25 marks.

170 Objective Questions Β· 225 Total Marks
Test Questions Maximum Marks Medium Sectional Time
Reasoning 40 60 English and Hindi 45 minutes
General, Economy, Banking, Digital and Financial Awareness, including RBI circulars 50 60 English and Hindi 35 minutes
English Language 40 20 English 35 minutes
Data Analysis and Interpretation 40 60 English and Hindi 45 minutes

Descriptive Paper: Essay and Comprehension 2 25 English 30 minutes

Descriptive examination 25 marks in 30 minutes
Main exam total 225 marks
  • The descriptive paper may broadly cover economic and social issues, banking and technology trends, current events and ethics.
  • Candidates must secure the required sectional and overall Main examination cut-offs.
  • Only Main examination marks are used for interview shortlisting and final merit preparation.

Negative marking and cut-off rules

A penalty applies to wrong answers in the objective sections of both the Preliminary and Main examinations.

  • One-fourth, or 0.25, of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each incorrect answer.
  • No penalty applies when a question is left unanswered.
  • Candidates must meet sectional and overall cut-offs decided by IBPS.
  • Scores from different sessions may be normalised using the equi-percentile method.

Personality Test and Interview

Candidates qualifying in the Main Examination must appear for the Personality Test before attending the Common Interview.

  • The Personality Test is non-qualifying but attendance is mandatory.
  • The interview carries 100 marks.
  • Minimum interview marks are 40% for General/EWS candidates.
  • Minimum interview marks are 35% for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates.

Final merit and provisional allotment

Final selection is based on the combined score obtained in the Main Examination and Common Interview. Preliminary Examination marks and the Personality Test do not contribute directly to final merit.

Main Examination: 80%
Interview: 20%
  • Candidates must qualify separately in the Main Examination and interview.
  • Provisional allotment is based on merit-cum-preference and available vacancies.
  • Reservation policy, eligibility, document verification and administrative requirements also apply.
  • If two candidates obtain the same score, the older candidate is placed higher in the merit order.
  • Provisional allotment does not by itself constitute an offer of employment.

Official pattern note: IBPS may change the examination structure, schedule or selection process through a later official notice. The information handout issued with the call letter will contain stage-specific examination instructions, and the latest official IBPS document will prevail.
