RRB JE Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification & Post-wise Rules
For RRB JE/DMS 2026 (CEN 04/2026), the normal age limit is 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027. Candidates must already possess the prescribed Diploma/Degree or other required qualification for the specific post by the application closing date. Candidates waiting for the final result of the required qualification cannot apply.
Who Is Eligible for RRB JE 2026?
You must satisfy all applicable conditions — age, nationality, the exact educational/technical qualification prescribed for your chosen post, and its medical standard. Meeting the age limit alone or simply holding an engineering qualification does not make you eligible for every JE/DMS vacancy.
Your Engineering Qualification Must Match the RRB JE Post
CEN 04/2026 does not provide one universal qualification for every vacancy. The required discipline depends on the post, department and technical group. Candidates should therefore match their Diploma/Degree with the qualification prescribed for the specific post before choosing an RRB or entering preferences.
The notification also states that a higher qualification such as B.E./B.Tech in the same discipline may be accepted in lieu of a three-year Diploma where applicable. However, a higher qualification in an unrelated discipline should not be assumed to make you eligible.
Candidates awaiting the final result of the prescribed educational or technical qualification on the closing date are not eligible to apply. The required qualification must already be possessed by the closing date of the application.
Check the Post First — Then Choose Your RRB
Your RRB choice and post preferences should follow your qualification match. Once you know which JE/DMS posts you are eligible for, continue to the step-by-step application guide.
Do not decide eligibility from “Diploma/Degree in Engineering” alone. First find the exact JE/DMS post you want, then match your branch/discipline against its prescribed qualification before selecting the RRB and post preference.
RRB JE Age Limit 2026: 18–33 Years as on 1 January 2027
The normal age limit for RRB JE/DMS CEN 04/2026 is 18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027. Reserved and special-category candidates can receive upper-age relaxation where they satisfy the conditions prescribed in the notification.
RRB JE 2026 Date of Birth Range
These DOB limits reflect the normal upper-age limit plus the applicable standard relaxation for OBC-NCL and SC/ST candidates. The lower age requirement remains 18 years.
RRB JE 2026 Upper Age Relaxation
| Category | Upper-age relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC-NCL | 3 years |
| SC / ST | 5 years |
| PwBD — UR / EWS | 10 years |
| PwBD — OBC-NCL | 13 years |
| PwBD — SC / ST | 15 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Relaxation depends on defence service and category under the conditions prescribed in CEN 04/2026. |
| Serving Railway staff / specified Railway organization employees | Special upper-age limits apply subject to the service conditions prescribed in the notification. |
| Widowed / divorced / judicially separated women | Special upper-age limits apply according to category, subject to the conditions in CEN 04/2026. |
Age Relaxation Is Not Automatic
If you claim SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwBD, Ex-Servicemen or another applicable relaxation, you must actually satisfy the relevant CEN conditions and possess the prescribed supporting certificate/document.
Where the notification does not specify another date, the closing date for online applications is the crucial date for claiming reservation, age relaxation, fee concession and related benefits.
Age is only the first filter. Your Diploma/Degree discipline must now match the exact JE/DMS post, and you must satisfy its prescribed medical standard.
Check eligibility using your exact date of birth, not just your current age. If you need an age relaxation, verify the category conditions and supporting certificate before claiming it in the RRB JE application.
Which Diploma or Degree Is Eligible for RRB JE 2026?
RRB JE 2026 does not use one common educational qualification for every Junior Engineer post. Your Diploma or Engineering/Technology degree must match the qualification prescribed for the post, and you must already possess that qualification by 13 September 2026.
RRB JE 2026 Engineering Discipline Mapping
CEN 04/2026 groups eligible engineering qualifications into four main technical exam groups. This mapping also determines the Technical Abilities paper you face in CBT-II.
Mechanical & Allied
Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Machining Engineering, Tools & Machining Engineering, Tools & Die Making Engineering and applicable combinations/sub-streams.
Electrical & Allied
Electrical Engineering and applicable combinations of sub-streams of Electrical Engineering.
Electronics & Allied
Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology and applicable sub-stream combinations.
Civil & Allied
Civil Engineering, applicable Civil Engineering sub-streams and three-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering where mapped by the CEN.
Do Not Use the Discipline List as a Universal Post-Eligibility List
The discipline mapping tells you which technical group a qualification belongs to. Your actual eligibility for an individual JE post still depends on the Post Parameters in Annexure A, which specifies the qualification, medical standard and PwBD suitability for each notified post.
Correct order: Qualification → Annexure A post match → Medical standard → Post preference. What Is the Qualification for Depot Material Superintendent (DMS)?
For Depot Material Superintendent, CEN 04/2026 states that a candidate with a three-year Diploma in Engineering in any engineering discipline can apply, subject to the other applicable eligibility conditions.
If an eligible DMS candidate’s qualification does not appear in the standard discipline-mapping chart, the candidate must choose one of the listed exam groups during the application process as instructed by the CEN.
What If You Have More Than One Eligible Engineering Qualification?
A candidate possessing more than one minimum educational qualification mapped to different exam groups can choose one exam group, provided the candidate also opts for post(s) whose educational qualification is mapped to that chosen group. The candidate can still remain eligible for the other opted posts for which the required educational qualification is possessed.
RRB JE Medical Eligibility: A-3, B-1 and C-1
Educational qualification alone is not enough. Annexure A also assigns a Railway medical standard to each post. Under CEN 04/2026, notified posts can carry standards such as A-3, B-1 or C-1.
LASIK Candidates Should Check the Medical Standard Before Applying
Candidates who have undergone LASIK or another surgical procedure to correct refractive error are not eligible for posts requiring A-3 medical standard.
B-1 can permit LASIK candidates only subject to the detailed medical conditions prescribed in the CEN, including surgery history, corneal thickness, visual acuity and other medical checks.
PwBD Eligibility Is Also Post-Specific
PwBD candidates should not assume that every JE/DMS post is suitable for every disability category. The notification identifies post-wise PwBD suitability and applicable sub-disability categories in Annexure A.
If a candidate is found medically unsuitable for the post opted for, CEN 04/2026 states that the candidate will not be considered for empanelment for that post and no alternative appointment is provided by the Railways.
Open Annexure A before selecting your post preferences. Check three things together: the exact educational qualification, the assigned medical standard and PwBD suitability where applicable. Matching only the engineering branch is not enough.
RRB JE 2026 Eligibility Checklist: Confirm These Before You Apply
Before submitting the form, confirm that you satisfy the age, nationality, educational qualification, post mapping and medical requirements for the specific JE/DMS post you want. RRB initially treats eligibility as provisional and checks supporting documents later.
Age: You fall within the applicable 18–33 year limit as on 1 January 2027, after any valid relaxation.
Date of birth: The DOB entered in the form matches your Matriculation/SSLC or equivalent certificate.
Qualification: You already hold the exact educational or technical qualification required for the post.
Closing-date rule: Your required qualification is already complete by 13 September 2026.
Post mapping: Your discipline matches the Post Parameters in Annexure A.
Medical fit: You meet the A-3, B-1 or C-1 standard assigned to the post you select.
Who Can Apply by Nationality?
CEN 04/2026 permits eligible candidates who are citizens of India, citizens of Nepal, subjects of Bhutan, and certain persons of Indian origin from the countries specified in the notification.
Where a Certificate of Eligibility from the Government of India is required, the candidate may be admitted provisionally but must produce that certificate during Document Verification.
Common RRB JE Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming every engineering branch is eligible for every JE post.
- Applying while the final qualifying result is still awaited.
- Ignoring the medical standard attached to the post.
- Claiming category relaxation without the prescribed supporting certificate.
- Entering a DOB that differs from the Class 10 record.
- Assuming PwBD suitability is the same for every notified post.
Now Choose Your RRB and Post Preferences Carefully
